Even if a doctor is in a rush, patients have the right to make sure that their questions are answered. The National Patient Safety Foundation’s “Ask Me 3” program encourages patients to ask basic questions about their care including:
1. What is my main problem?
Make sure you understand the diagnosis and ask for clarification, if needed. Ask your doctor to write down information if necessary.
2. What do I need to do?
Understand what the treatment is, what any medications are for and whether there are any side effects.
3. Why is it important for me to do this?
Understand the risks and benefits of any treatment.
