Chicago Health at the Farmers Market

Connecting with community members and talking with kids about journalism

Chicago Health Editor stands at a table at the Farmers Market If you stopped by the bustling Portage Park Farmers Market this past weekend, you may have spotted Chicago Health. Our Editor-in-Chief Katie Scarlett Brandt was on hand, talking with community members about the importance of media and health literacy, gathering story ideas, and listening to their questions and concerns about the state of healthcare and medicine.

“Is there anything good happening?” One woman asked.

Kids who stopped by the booth could make alphabet-bead bracelets, color pages from the ABCs of Journalism activity book, and flip through children’s books about journalism: She Persisted: Nellie Bly by Michelle Knudsen and Kid Reporter Field Guide: A How-To Book for Junior Journalists by Hannah Rose Holzer.

Market attendees picked up free issues of Chicago Health and Caregiving magazines, as well as an informational sheet with resources our reporters use to find reliable health and medical information. We’ve also made the sheet available below for our online readers.

Market organizers invited Chicago Health to share space at the market with local children’s author and University of Illinois Chicago anatomist Abbey Breckling, Block Club Chicago’s Northwest Side reporter Molly DeVore, and local comic writer Dave Scheidt.

Stay tuned to our social media and newsletter for more chances to catch up with our Chicago Health team in person.
